THE TELECOM MUSEUM

This is a collection of telegraph, telephone, radio, artefacts photographs, technical books, papers & reports representative of telecommunications from the 1840s towards the present day.

The collection began in the 1930s in Wellington by a number of people realising that history was being lost. Items were placed in a variety of buildings occupied by the NZ Post & Telegraph Department. In 1978 the museum became official & had a staff of two curators.

At Corporatisation in 1986 the collection was split between NZ Post, Banking & Telecom NZ.

The museum is on long time loan to Ferrymead Heritage Park & in the custody of the Post & Telegraph Historical Society Inc. Some of the artefacts are displayed in the Hall of Wheels; the picture is a sample. Others are displayed in the Post Office.

We get enquiries for information or pictures that may be in the archives or information on past employees.
